Trauma is a word we often hear, but may not always fully understand. It goes beyond difficult memories or upsetting experiences. Trauma can linger in the body and mind, dramatically influencing our emotions, behaviors, and relationships in ways we may not even recognize. Fortunately, specialized trauma therapies like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Brainspotting are transforming the way people heal from trauma.

In this blog, we’ll explore what trauma really is and How EMDR and Brainspotting can help with healing,

Understanding Trauma

Trauma refers to the emotional response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event. It can be a single event, such as a car accident or natural disaster, or more chronic experiences, like childhood neglect, emotional abuse, or repeated exposure to stress.

There are different types of trauma:

  • Acute trauma – resulting from a single incident.
  • Chronic trauma – repeated and prolonged experiences (e.g., domestic violence, ongoing bullying).
  • Complex trauma –exposure to multiple traumatic events, often aggressive and relational in nature.

While some people may recover from trauma naturally, for others it can remain “stuck” in the nervous system and the brain, leading to symptoms such as:

  • Anxiety or panic attacks
  • Flashbacks or intrusive and painful memories
  • Emotional numbness, problems focusing or detachment
  • Difficulty trusting others
  • Physical symptoms (headaches, fatigue, tension, stomach issues etc.)

Traditional talk therapy can help, but some forms of trauma require deeper, body-based approaches. That’s where EMDRand Brainspotting come in.

People who feel overwhelmed by reliving trauma may prefer the gentle pacing of Brainspotting, while those who want more structured reprocessing might gravitate toward EMDR.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy approach developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. It’s particularly effective in treating PTSD and trauma-related symptoms.

How It Works:
During EMDR sessions, a therapist guides you to recall distressing memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation such as guided back and forth eye movements, tapping, or sounds. This process helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories, reducing their emotional charge (intensity) and changing how they are stored in the brain and nervous system

Benefits of EMDR:

  • Reduces emotional reactivity to painful memories
  • Often shows results faster than traditional talk therapy
  • Helps create new, healthier beliefs about oneself and the world in the deeper parts of the brain.
  • Recognized by the World Health Organization and American Psychological Association as an effective treatment for trauma

Brainspotting is a relatively newer, but powerful therapeutic tool developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003. It is based on the idea that “where you look affects how you feel.

How It Works:
The therapist helps you find a “brainspot” — a specific eye position linked to the stored trauma in your brain and body. While you focus on that spot, the therapist supports you in processing the associated emotions and body sensations.

Brainspotting bypasses the conscious mind, allowing you to tap into the deeper brain regions where trauma is held, especially in the subcortical brain — the area responsible for emotions, memories, and body regulation.

Benefits of Brainspotting:

  • Effective for trauma, anxiety, depression, performance issues, and more
  • Works deeply with the body’s somatic responses
  • Can access preverbal trauma and nonverbal memory
  • Gentle, client-led, and often described as “bottom-up” ,the areas below your mind, healing

Which One Is Right for You?

Both EMDR and Brainspotting are evidence-based and trauma-informed, and many therapists are trained in both. Some differences:

  • EMDR is more structured, with an 8-phase protocol
  • Brainspotting is more flexible and can feel more meditative or somatic

People who feel overwhelmed by reliving trauma may prefer the gentle pacing of Brainspotting, while those who want more structured reprocessing might gravitate toward EMDR.

Final Thoughts

Trauma doesn’t have to define your life. Whether it’s a single painful memory or years of cumulative experiences, healing is possible — not by forgetting, but by integrating. Modalities like EMDR and Brainspotting help unlock the body’s natural ability to heal, offering relief, clarity, and getting your life back by “moving past your past”.
