Trauma & PTSD Counseling in Charlotte, NC

Traumatic experiences become deeply lodged in our psyches and bring many negative effects to our lives. Whether your trauma occurred as a single experience or as a series of experiences, it can impact your life through issues such as insomnia, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, or physical ailments.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is common among those who have experienced traumatic events, but the good news is that it does not need to be a lifelong affliction. At Charlotte Counseling Associates, we bring a deep understanding of how the brain, body, and trauma are closely related. Through forms of therapy such as EMDR and Brainspotting, we bring relief to those who are suffering from trauma. There is hope for healing, and we are here to help.

How EMDR and Brainspotting Therapies Heal Trauma

EMDR and Brainspotting are extremely effective therapeutic methods for healing trauma since they access the parts of the brain where trauma is stored. The brain has many distinct areas with distinct functions and capabilities. When we think, talk, and make decisions, we use the part of the brain called the prefrontal cortex. When we feel emotions and remember memories, we use the middle brain, or limbic system. The brainstem controls our basic urges and fight, flight, or freeze instincts. Trauma is not stored in the prefrontal cortex, the logical part of our brain - it is stored in the middle brain and brainstem.

Because classic talk therapy does not tap into the part of the brain where trauma is stored, it can often fall short in treating trauma. This is why EMDR and Brainspotting are so effective in healing the parts of the brain where trauma resides.
