Have you betrayed your wife or significant other? If so, this group will help!
Betrayal Trauma is a term used to describe when someone betrays their partner, according to our clients and current statistics, this is usually a husband, fiancée or boyfriend cheating on their loved one in one or more of these ways:
- Flirting with another woman/women
- Talking to another woman about your relationship problems/sex life or listening to theirs.
- Lying about who they are with
- Having an emotional and/or sexual affair
- Digital Cheating: Using pornography, social media, sites like (reddit, Onlyfans, Youtube, adult friend finder, Ashley Madison, Sugar daddy websites, dating/hook-up apps and more.
- Physical Cheating: Going to Strip clubs, Sexual massage spas, hiring a escort/prostitute, or more.
- This can also include sending and/or receiving sexual pics for money, gifts or another favor.
Sexual betrayal hurts
Whether you are a man or woman, it can feel like a bomb has exploded in your lap and you are left to pick up the pieces. You are wandering who this person is that you have loved for so long, how could they do this to you and if there is anything else he or she is still hiding from you. Please do not go this alone. One way for someone caught in cheating to help in the healing process of a partner, besides working with a CSAT (Certified Sexual Addictions Therapist), is to learn the skills of honest and authentic empathy in a group setting.
Men, your partner has been traumatized so severely, that even if they seem to be okay, in many cases the pain of betrayal trauma may make them seem like they love you one moment and hate you the next. They may become “triggered” or emotionally set off for many reasons, such as your taking your phone to the bathroom, not letting them see your phone, and coming home late to name a few. Besides working with a specialist CSAT and letting them know the extent of what you have done, completing a therapeutic formal disclosure, this will be done later with the help of the specialist, and working on a relapse prevention or abstinence plan; the single biggest way to heal and support your betrayed partner is to learn empathy skills now!
Men’s Empathy Group!
There are many great books, workbooks, videos, and even individual therapy with a CSAT that can help you with this. I have found that the quickest way to learn these skills is to work with a trained CSAT in a small, confidential group of other men who have betrayed their partners. The men, and their wives/girlfriends, that I have worked with have reported that this empathy group along with specialized therapy have been the crucial recipe to help them learn how to move out of the shame spiral, and into the present where they can authentically empathize with their partners, make them feel heard, seen and safe. Although this journey make take months or longer, it is the best way we know how to help her heal. This is not in any way manipulative or trying to sound like a therapist. In this group you will learn:
- What is empathy?
- Why you may never have learned empathy growing up
- How to be patient with the process of continuously being empathetic, even when it is hard.
- Practicing in role-play scenarios, once the group has time to get to know each other, feel safe, and understand where every member is at with their specific situation.
- You will be supported, challenged, but always in a non-shameful way, as shame is the gasoline that only contributes to addiction and other unhealthy behavior.
- You will bring in your real life scenarios, and by the end of the group have a plan to continue to be empathethic, feel grounded, healthy, and most importantly to help her feel safe and work on healing your relationship.
After this group has ended, depending on your other supports in therapy, you may decide to attend a “Help Them to Heal” Workshop class, where you will take the skills learned in this group, and multiply them with your significant other, in a class of 4-6 couples that will each be working towards healing, healthy connection, and most importantly practicing empathy skills together.
The time to act is now. Empathy takes time, and now is the time.
